What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to save on your phone or computer when you visit. The next time you open the site, your browser hands that file back, so the site can recognise the same browser.

A cookie is not a program. It cannot read the other files on your device and it cannot give you a virus.

What we use them for

We use cookies for two things:

• To keep the site working. These remember practical things — that you are signed in, which account you are working in, and what you chose last time — so the site behaves the way you expect. Without them, parts of the site simply do not work.
• To measure our adverts. These tell us how well an advert worked — for example, how many people who clicked an advert went on to book a meeting — so we do not keep paying for adverts that bring nobody.

Advertising cookies from Meta and LinkedIn

Some of our pages carry the Meta Pixel and the LinkedIn Insight Tag. These are small pieces of code from Meta (Facebook) and from LinkedIn, and they set cookies of their own.

We use them to measure how well our adverts are working and to show adverts to people who have visited our pages before. Those companies also receive the information the tools collect, and they handle it under their own privacy terms.

Pages that do not carry these tools do not load them and do not set their cookies at all.

How to switch cookies off

You are in control of cookies in your own browser. In Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox, open Settings and look for Privacy — from there you can block cookies, block only third-party cookies, or delete the cookies a site has already saved. The Help menu in your browser explains the exact steps for the version you are running.

You can also turn off personalised advertising in your Facebook and LinkedIn advertising settings, which limits what those tools do with what they collect.

If you block cookies that keep the site working, parts of the site — signing in, for one — will stop working properly. Blocking the advertising cookies does not affect your use of the site at all.
